I was employed back in the late 70's by the the late Ricardo Bordello former "Governor of Guam" to perform to all dignitaries and official's coming in to the island of Guam from all over the world. Our responsibilities and 30 members of the "Governor's Youth Band" (GYB) was to perform classical, concert and ethnic music to compliment officials with their own national music theme. Rehearsal was not an option to prefect the great sound of the "Governor's Youth Band" its a fun and most enjoyable time during my high school days at George Washington High School.
We were invited by an official from the Washington DC staff to participate in the 1978 inauguration for Jimmy Carter, former, President of the United States. The experience at the "White House" was incredibly overwhelming to all of us as Chamorro Islanders from Guam. The year, 1979, at the opening of the new "Grand Hotel" in Saipan (northen Marianas) and the inauguration of the new elected Governor of "The Common Wealth of Northern Marianas". Congratulating the new Governor of CNMI by performing in the Grand Hotel and marching down susupe village in Saipan MI.
Join the United States Army to serve and protect our great country the "United States of America" the year 1979. Four years of serving uncle sams army I work as a ligh/heavy vehicle mechanic. No, didn't do the Army Band to which I persistently ask the recuiter to assign me a "saxophone player" for the US Army. Long story short, I joined in a "Jazz Group" within the army recreation center called "The Smooth Jazz Players" consist of four members, guitar, bass, keyboard and drums . We perform in many military and civilian functions, such as, Military Army Bowl in Ft Benning, Georgia main-post center every year. This continued on for the rest of my enlisted carrier as a Sergeant E5 in the Army.
Moved to beautiful city and state, Monterey, California and live for ten years. I join in many groups such as, Big Bands (volunteer only), Trio Jazz Groups and a local Top Forty Bands. Performing in many clubs, corporate events, fundraisers and private parties. Our "Trio Jazz Quartet" open up for many of the "Monterey Jazz Festival". Miles Davis, Spyro-Gyra, Tower of Power and many of the late and great all-time Jazz players.
I have moved on to another beautiful city and state, San Diego California, and have been here performing with many professional groups and players. Now, I have moved into another field in the music industry, as a, Disc Jockey, part-time only. Through the years I've been request for saxophone studio time with my saxophone's (Soprano, Alto and Tenor) playing for churches, Jazz groups and for all-time recording greats. Lou Rawls, Sonrise Baptist, Carlos Santana and many incredible musical artists. This experience has brought me to recording my own album called, "Chamoru Yu" for the "The Chamorro's" living in the mainland and the Marianas islands.
This basically gave me the inspiration through my father and mentor in life, Vicente C. Lizama. Thank you father for giving us this God given talent that we can all expose and share with everyone other than our culture and our people, the Chamorro's" even in the American way of music life...!! To my family, friends and fans throughout the country and through the years who have given me the courage and motivation to create this new album in which is now available....Thank You and Si Yu'os Ma'ase...!
